In short: MDCAT is for MBBS and BDS, ECAT is the entry test for UET engineering, and USAT is HEC's test for undergraduate (BS) admissions in many universities, in 6 groups from Pre-Medical to Commerce. Many students take more than 1 of these to keep their options open.
Quick comparison
| USAT | MDCAT | ECAT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| For | BS and other undergraduate programs | MBBS and BDS | Engineering at UETs |
| Who runs it | HEC (Education Testing Council) | The medical council and the university it picks | UET Lahore |
| Groups | 6 (Pre-Med, Pre-Eng, CS, Arts, GS, Commerce) | 1 | Engineering streams |
| Main subjects | English, maths reasoning and your group's 3 subjects | Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and logical reasoning | Maths, Physics, English and Chemistry or Computer Science |
| Has an essay | Yes, 2 essays | No | No |
| Held | Several times a year | Once a year | Once a year |
Rules change every year. Always check the admission page of the exact university and program you want.
If you are Pre-Medical
For MBBS or BDS, you need the MDCAT. But many Pre-Medical students also take USAT-M for BS programs like biotechnology, nutrition, microbiology or psychology at universities that ask for it. Since USAT is held several times a year, it is a good backup if MDCAT does not go well. See our USAT-M guide.
If you are Pre-Engineering
UETs use ECAT, and some big universities like NUST have their own test. For other universities that ask for USAT, take USAT-E. The maths you prepare for ECAT also helps a lot in USAT, because 35 of the 75 USAT-E MCQs are maths. Read the USAT-E guide.
If you are ICS, ICom or FA
USAT is usually the main test for you: USAT-CS for computer science, USAT-COM for commerce and business, and USAT-A for arts and social sciences. See the Arts, Commerce and General Science guide.
My honest opinion
Do not put all your hopes on one test. Students who take 2 tests, for example MDCAT and USAT-M, or ECAT and USAT-E, have more choices when the merit lists come out. The USAT also has 5 sittings a year, so you can take it again if your first score is low. The next one is on 13 December 2026.
Common questions
Can I get MBBS admission with USAT?
No. For MBBS and BDS you need the MDCAT. USAT-M is for other undergraduate programs, like BS programs.
Is USAT required for engineering?
Many engineering universities use their own test, like ECAT for UET. Some universities accept USAT. Check the admission page of each university.
Can I take both USAT and MDCAT?
Yes. They are separate tests with separate dates, so many Pre-Medical students take both to keep more options open.
Who conducts the USAT?
The Education Testing Council (ETC) of the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
