PhD Admission in Pakistan: HAT Score, Requirements and Process

By Tayar Karo team,

PhD admission in Pakistan requires a HAT score of at least 60 out of 100. But HAT is just the entry point. Here is the full process — from test to enrolment — and what makes a strong application.

PhD admission requirements at a glance

RequirementDetails
HAT scoreMinimum 60 out of 100 (HEC policy). Some universities require more.
Degree needed18-year education: BS (4 years) + MS/MPhil (2 years). Or equivalent.
GPA/marksMost universities ask for first division or 3.0 GPA in MS/MPhil. No third division.
InterviewMost departments conduct a research interview.
Research proposalUsually required. 1 to 3 pages outlining your intended research topic.

The PhD admission process step by step

  1. Get your HAT score of 60 or above. Make sure the test you took matches the field you want to study (HAT-I for engineering/CS, HAT-II for business, HAT-III for arts/social sciences, HAT-IV for medical/health sciences).
  2. Find a supervisor. For a research-based PhD in Pakistan, most departments want you to identify a potential supervisor before or during application. Email professors whose research matches your interest and ask if they have capacity.
  3. Write a research proposal. Keep it simple: what problem do you want to study, why does it matter, and what method will you use. 1 to 2 pages is enough for most applications.
  4. Apply to the university. Fill the online form, attach your documents, and pay the application fee.
  5. Appear for the interview. The department will call shortlisted candidates. They ask about your research proposal and your MS/MPhil work.
  6. Get the admission letter and pay the semester fee by the deadline.

Documents usually needed for PhD admission

  • HAT result card (60 or above)
  • MS or MPhil degree or provisional certificate
  • Official transcripts of BS and MS/MPhil
  • Research proposal (1–3 pages)
  • 2 letters of recommendation from academic supervisors
  • CNIC copy and passport-size photos
  • Publication list (if you have any)

Check the specific university's PhD admission notification for the exact list. Requirements vary.

HEC scholarships for PhD

HEC offers two main scholarship programmes for PhD students:

  • HEC Indigenous Scholarships: Fund your PhD at a Pakistani university. You must be admitted to an HEC-recognised university. The scholarship covers tuition and a monthly stipend.
  • HEC Overseas Scholarships: Fund PhD at a foreign university. You need HAT 60 (or GRE Subject equivalent), a foreign university acceptance letter, and strong academic record. See our HEC overseas scholarship guide.

Both have limited seats and competitive merit. Apply as early as possible when HEC opens each round.

What makes a strong PhD application beyond HAT?

HAT 60 gets you in the door. What separates strong applicants from weak ones:

  • A clear, focused research proposal. Vague topics like "I want to study education in Pakistan" are weak. Specific is better: "I want to study the effect of mobile learning apps on student retention in rural Punjab."
  • A potential supervisor who knows your name. Email professors whose papers you have read. Reference their work. Most professors appreciate a thoughtful email from a serious student.
  • Publications or research experience. Even one conference paper or research assistant experience makes your application stand out.
  • A strong MS/MPhil thesis. Your thesis topic and grade are the first things the interview panel looks at.

Can you do PhD directly after BS without MPhil?

HEC allows direct PhD if you have at least 18 years of education. A 4-year BS plus 2-year MS/MPhil adds up to 18 years. If you have an 18-year degree, most universities will consider your PhD application directly. But most departments still prefer candidates who have completed MPhil, especially in research-heavy fields.

Common questions

What HAT score is needed for PhD admission in Pakistan?

HEC Graduate Education Policy 2023 requires at least 60 out of 100 in HAT for PhD admission. Some universities set a higher cutoff.

Can I do a PhD without MPhil in Pakistan?

Yes. HEC allows direct PhD after an 18-year degree (BS 4-year + MS/MPhil 2-year is 18 years). Some universities also allow direct PhD after a strong 16-year BS, but this is less common.

Is HAT enough for PhD or do I need GRE too?

HAT is enough for most Pakistani universities. A few top universities or programs ask for GRE Subject in addition or instead. Check with your specific department.

What is the difference between indigenous and overseas PhD scholarships from HEC?

HEC Indigenous Scholarships fund PhD at Pakistani universities. HEC Overseas Scholarships fund PhD abroad. Both require HAT 60 (or GRE equivalent). Overseas also needs a foreign university acceptance letter.

How long does a PhD take in Pakistan?

Typically 3 to 5 years after MPhil. HEC sets a minimum of 3 years for a PhD.
