Students in groups ask all the time: which book should I use for HAT? The honest answer is that no single book is enough. Here is what actually helps, and what to combine for the best result.
Start here: official HEC sample papers (free)
Before buying any book, download the official HEC sample papers for HAT. These are free on the ETC portal. They show you the exact question style, difficulty level, and time pressure of the real test. Nothing else comes closer to the actual HAT.
Go to etc.hec.gov.pk, find the HAT section, and download the specimen or sample paper for your category (HAT-I, II, III or IV). Read the instructions too. They tell you how many questions there are and how much time you get.
Dogar's Quick HAT Guide
This is the most used book among HAT students in Pakistan. You can find it at any good bookshop. It covers:
- Verbal reasoning: vocabulary, analogies, sentence completion, reading comprehension
- Analytical reasoning: logic puzzles, sequences, arguments
- Quantitative reasoning: maths, percentages, ratios, basic statistics
It is a good book for understanding what each section tests and getting practice questions. But it has one big weakness: it does not replicate the time pressure of the real HAT. Read it to learn the material, then practice under timed conditions separately.
What each section needs
Verbal Reasoning
- Dogar's vocabulary sections are useful. Do them first.
- Read a serious English newspaper (Dawn, The News) for 15 minutes every day. This builds reading speed and comprehension naturally.
- Our vocabulary word list has high-frequency words that appear in HAT.
Analytical Reasoning
- Dogar's has a good analytical section. Work through it.
- After that, practice with timed question sets. Speed is everything here.
- See our analytical reasoning tips for a section breakdown.
Quantitative Reasoning
- If your maths is weak, get an intermediate or O-level maths review book and revise percentages, ratios, algebra, and basic statistics. Any standard book works.
- Dogar's quant section is fine for practice once you have the basics.
A simple resource plan
| Week | What to use |
|---|---|
| Week 1–2 | HEC sample paper (to understand the test). Dogar's (to cover each section topic by topic). |
| Week 3–4 | Timed practice sets by section on Tayar Karo. Vocabulary 10 words per day. One newspaper article per day. |
| Week 5–6 | Full timed HAT papers. Review every wrong answer. Last 2 days: rest and light review only. |
What you can skip
- Multiple books at once. More books does not mean better preparation. Use one guide well, then move to timed practice.
- Long notes and summaries. HAT does not test theory. It tests your ability to apply thinking quickly. Notes help for vocabulary, not for analytical or quantitative sections.
- Cramming the night before. Sleep is more useful than last-minute cramming for a reasoning test.
The most important thing
HAT is a speed test. Students fail not because they do not know the answers, but because they run out of time. Whatever resources you use, always practice with a timer. If you do 100 questions without a timer and 0 questions with one, you will struggle on test day. Timed practice is the single most important thing you can do.
Use our practice tests on Tayar Karo. They are timed and sorted by section, so you can work on exactly what you need.
Common questions
What is the best book for HAT preparation?
The best starting point is the official HEC sample papers from the ETC portal. For a guide book, Dogar's Quick HAT Guide is widely used by students in Pakistan.
Where can I find free HAT sample papers?
Download them directly from the HEC ETC portal at etc.hec.gov.pk. Go to the HAT section and look for sample papers or specimen papers.
Is Dogar's HAT guide enough to pass?
Dogar's covers the basics well. But for better scores, you need timed practice with full papers. A book alone without timed practice is not enough for HAT.
Are there any online HAT practice tests?
Yes. Tayar Karo (this site) has timed HAT practice sets by section. Make a free account and practice in exam conditions.
